Investigating Restorative Justice approaches for wildlife crime
This study examines wildlife and environmental legislation worldwide to understand how wildlife crimes are defined, prosecuted, and penalised across different countries. We explore variations in sentencing, the use of restorative or non-custodial measures, and question the broader effectiveness of these approaches in reducing reoffending.
The project was jointly undertaken by myself, Professor Tanya Wyatt (Northumbria University), and Scott Roberton (Wildlife Conservation Society), with additional analysis of available crime statistics conducted by Maria Del Camino and Willis Okumu.
The results are presented in the dashboard below (Version 1, June 2023), which provides both a global overview and detailed country-level insights. We view this dashboard as a living resource and invite contributions from the global community to help keep the database current and comprehensive
